Rock(ies) Bottom?

Baseball shattering into glowing fragments mid-air above a baseball field at dusk

With the A’s, Giants and Rockies on the schedule, the hope was that the Cubs would be able to turn things around and win some games. Instead, they’ve continued to lose and lose and lose again.

This time, it was the starting pitching that let them down. It seems like they if they pitch well, they can’t hit. And if they get 4 or 5 runs, their starting pitcher gives up 6 or 7. Colin Rea had been their 2nd best starter lately, but he got shelled last night. My next pitcher rating post is going to be a doozy.

But the thing is, it is impossible to tell whether this is truly their low point, when there is another game today where they could fall even lower. Shota Imanaga pitching in Coors filed (or whatever they’re calling it these days) is a match made in the deep depths of Hell. If he doesn’t give up 3 home runs tonight, it will be a minor miracle. And after his last outing, who knows what Edward Cabrera will bring to the party on Thursday. And even if either of them pitch much better than expected, can the offense even do anything?

Matthew Boyd should be back this weekend, but he hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire with his performances so far. And with the current trajectory of the team, it would seem foolish to make any trades sacrificing future talent to try to rescue this season.

Could they still turn things around? Sure, but the chances that it will even make a difference to the outcome of the season are slipping every single day.

At this point, 2026 is shaping up to be one of the more disappointing Cubs season in a while.
