Can the Cubs “get right” in June?

While May was a disaster for the Cubs, their schedule in June could help them get back to some winning ways. It also gives them the chance to play some weaker teams while they wait for Matthew Boys and Edward Cabrera to get healthy.

Here is the Cubs schedule over the next couple of weeks:

  • 3 games vs the A’s (28-31)
  • 3 games versus the Giants (23-37)
  • 3 games at the Rockies (23-38)
  • 3 games at the Giants
  • 3 games versus the Rockies
  • 3 games versus the Blue Jays (29-31)
  • 4 games at the Mets (26-34)

So that’s 22 straight games against teams with losing records. Now, we all know that the Mets and Jays were considered strong playoff contenders, so those games should be tougher than what their records currently suggest. But still, the combined winning percentage of these 5 teams is .430.

The Cubs finish the month with difficult series at the Brewers and home to the Padres. So, they really need to take advantage of the 22-game stretch. The Brewers are on one of their magical stretches, but they have the Phillies, Guardians, Braves and Reds in this stretch of games, so hopefully, the Cubs can make up some ground.

If the Cubs are no closer to the Brewers after these next 22 games, I think the division may be out of reach, as I just don’t see this Brewers team going on a losing streak similar to what we saw the Cubs go through. And if they are not able to win at least 13 or 14 of these games, I think the Wild Card hopes might also come into question.

But with Boyd and Cabrera coming back, that should give a little more stability to a reeling starting rotation. And the team should be able to break out from nearly team-wide slump the offense went through in May. At least we can hope it will.
