Who won the trade: Edward Cabrera versus Owen Caissie?

You might think it’s too early to judge a trade after 4 games, and I, like any rational person would agree with you. But there were some out on the internet that seemed to be judging the trade after 3 days – when Caissie hit a walk off home run to win a game for the Marlins.

Of course, that brought out lots of overreactors on Twitter, proclaiming the trade as a failure for the Cubs, despite the fact that Cabrera had yet to start a game:

Of course, Edward Cabrera was lights out in his first Cubs start, going 6 innings giving up 1 hit and 1 walk.

Twitter hit back, with several posters touting Cabrera’s great performance.

Ultimately, we have no idea how this trade will turn out. There’s very little chance that either will be as good as they have been thus far this season. We won’t really know the outcome of this trade for years, and yet, people want a definitive answer after four days. Or rather, they want to give their opinion after 3 or 4 days.

The Cubs’ front office may have made a bad trade. Or they may have made a good trade. But one of their key weaknesses for this season and moving forward was a starter who can get strikeouts, and now they have a guy who they control for this season and two more. And those kinds of players require a lot of value in return.

Texas traded for MacKensie Gore, who only has 2 yeas of control, giving up 5 players, include the #14 player in last year’s draft. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47695824/sources-rangers-get-mackenzie-gore-trade-nationals

And you might think Gore has a better major league track record, but Cabrera actually has a 6.8 WAR versus Gore’s 6.1. Sure, Texas may have made a bad deal, but the point is that quality starting pitching is very expensive.

I’m going to root for Oewn Caissie, unless he is playing against the Cubs, and will try to allow the season to unfold before making any definitive statements about where the trade was a win or a loss.
