Ex-Cubs: who made the rosters and who didn’t?

There were lots of Cubs fighting for roster sports in the MLB this Spring, and while some made it, lots of others did not.

Made it – on the Active Roster to start the season

  • Jeimer Candelario – Angels
  • Jorge Soler – Angels
  • Drew Pomeranz – Angels
  • Isaac Parades – Astros
  • Aaron Civale – Athletics
  • Mark Leiter Jr. – Athletics
  • Brendon Little – Blue Jays
  • Tommy Nance – Blue Jays
  • Trevor Megill – Brewers
  • Carlos Santana – Diamondbacks
  • Ildemaro Vargas – DIamondbacks
  • Michael Soroka – Diamondbacks
  • Kyle Tucker – Dodgers
  • Caleb Kilian – Giants
  • Shaun Armstrong – Guardians
  • Christopher Morel – Marlins
  • Owen Caissie – Marlins
  • Jared Young – Mets
  • Luis Torrens – Mets
  • Brooks Raley – Mets
  • Richard Lovelady – Mets
  • Nick Castellanos – Padres
  • Jeremiah Estrada – Padres
  • Kyle Schwarber – Phillies
  • Brad Keller – Phillies
  • Joc Pederson – Rangers
  • Chris Martin – Rangers
  • Willson Contreras – Red Sox
  • Aroldis Chapman – Red Sox
  • Pierce Johnson – Reds
  • Willi Castro – Rockies
  • Jose Quintana – Rockies
  • Javier Baez – Tigers
  • Zach McKinstry – Tigers
  • Victor Caratini – Twins
  • Taylor Rogers – Twins
  • Reece McGuire – White Sox
  • Sean Newcomb – White Sox
  • Cody Bellinger – Yankees

Vargas is an interesting name, who made the DBacks as a non-Roster invitee. Jeimer Candelario made the Angels as an NRI. Journeymen Richard Lovelady made the Mets opening day roster, along with Jared Young.

Made it but landed on the 10/15-day IL

  • Hayden Wesneski – Astros
  • Nate Pearson – Astros
  • Rob Zastryzny – Brewers
  • Miles Mastrobuoni – Mariners
  • Andrew Kittredge – Orioles
  • Jason Adam – Padres

60-day IL guys

  • Trevor WIlliams – Nationals
  • Manual Rodriguez – Rays
  • Kris Bryant – Rockies

On the 40-man roster but sent to the minors (won’t be going anywhere)

  • Codi Heuer – Guardians
  • Hunter Bigge – Rays
  • Eli Morgan – Royals
  • Kervin Castro – Yankees

Injured but not on the 40-man roster

  • Mike Tauchman – Mets
  • Luis Vasquez – Orioles
  • Robert Stock – Mets

Sent to minor league camp and did not make the roster – these folks might request a release

  • Nick Madrigal – Angels
  • Tom Cosgrove – Astros
  • Brooks Kriske – Athletics
  • Nelson Velasquez – Cardinals
  • Yency Almonte – Dodgers
  • Michael Fulmer – Giants
  • Patrick Wisdom – Mariners
  • Michael Rucker – Mariners
  • Jesus Tinoco – Marlins
  • Adbert Alzolay – Mets
  • Carl Edwards Jr. – Mets
  • Nick Burdi – Mets
  • Matt Mervis – Nationals
  • Sergio Alcantara – Nationals
  • Enoli Parades – Orioles
  • Genesis Cabrera – Phillies
  • Nicky Lopez – Rockies
  • Jose Cuas – Royals
  • Gage Workman – Tigers
  • Tomas Nido – Tigers
  • Scott Effross – Tigers
  • Julian Merryweather – Twins
  • Tyson Miller – White Sox

One guys who some thought would make it was Nelson Velasquez, who raked during the spring. Adbert Alzolay, Carl Edwards Jr., Patrick Wisdom, Matt Mervis and Julian Merryweather are other former Cubs favorites who could not crack an opening day roster.
